It’s all in the details…..

I am very excited and honored to be part of the Taste of the Nation party at historic Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth New Hampshire next week. It is a fantastic fundraising event hosted by Share Our Strength, Seacoast which is part of the national anti-hunger organization, Share Our Strength. The money raised directly benefits local organizations that help feed hungry children in our area.

I am helping to decorate the VIP tent with flowers, lighting and some extra special touches. One of the unique accents will be custom, silkscreened pillows for adirondack chairs generously on loan from our good friend Scott Masi of Chairman of the Board in York, Maine. I could not make the pillows happen with out my neighbor Rachel who is a very creative and talented artist and graphic designer. We were at her studio on Sunday printing the pillow covers and we were so excited with the results. As I looked at the covers drying on the line I was inspired to create custom banners for a ceremony, decoration in a tent or draped in trees with lights for evening cocktails…the possibilities are endless and I hope I get to work more with this process for my clients! I think the pillows are going to be too cool and couldn’t wait to post photos of our work from Sunday.

Professional photos will be posted asap following the event but for now here is a taste of what we are cooking up for Taste of the Nation. Share Our Strength is a nationwide organization that has Taste events throughout the states – look for one of their benefits in your town and go out and have a good time while supporting a crucial cause in our neighborhoods!

This past season I was very fortunate to work with Stacey Glassman who is the owner and master of creative cuisine extraordinaire of Swan’s Way Catering. Stacey is not only a fantastic caterer but her creative displays using vegetables, fruits and flowers are so inspiring to me. Taking something as simple as a brussel sprout plant and putting it in a vase is dramatic, organic and beautiful. I think I had Stacey’s vision in the back of my head the otherday as I was taking out some swiss chard to add to the ricotta mix for a lasagna. The dramatic red vein of the plant against the forest green leaf was so graphic and intense and captivating I had to take a photo……this led to my thought of somehow incorporating more unique edibles in my arrangements. In the past I have used limes, apples, dried plant pods, interesting vines and tropical leaves in my floral designs but I am always keeping my eye out for ideas that keep my creative energy flowing. I have a wedding show coming up on February 15 in York and I can’t wait to highlight an arrangement with the vase lined with swiss chard. I also have some ideas about using wired strawberries which I will play with…..so if you’re having a hard time figuring out your colors or finding a special something to make your wedding details unique you may want to have a look in your refrigerator!

I’ll gush more about Stacey and highlight some photos from the two weddings we collaborated on in a future posts. In the meantime be sure to visit her website. www.cateringmaine.com
